Tennis tests

Jasmine Wong, a sophomore liberal studies major, holds out a yardstick during an activity in an introduction to a physical science class lab outside the Peterson Hall 2 building on Monday afternoon. Students were dropping a tennis ball from the second floor and seeing how high it bounced, said Eren Karadayi, the teaching assistant. Earlier, he said that the class had measured shorter bounces and calculated how high it would bounce during the activity and would compare the two.

Biology graduate student research

Graduate biology major student Colleen O'Rourke discusses her "Eye of the Hawk" research thesis in the grassy area between the PH1 and the PH2 on Wednesday afternoon. Her presentation is part of the Department of Biology's event showing what its graduate students have been working on.

Regarding her research, O'Rourke said, "The vision [of hawks] is different based on what they hunt and where they live." She said that the vision of the Cooper's Hawk, for instance, is adopted for chasing small birds. On the other hand, the American Kestrel hunts insects. Its vision has more binocular overlap that allows for greater acuity (clearness of vision) for it to hunt insects better than the Cooper's Hawk.

Hall of Sciences construction

Construction on the new PH3 Hall of Sciences building construction is humming along. They're apparently trying to make the ground smooth and flat before starting a foundation. The Daily 49er has an article titled "Hall of Science will allow more extensive research" with a wider angle. I like this shot better because it shows the workers at work.
